How to do it…

Let's get started with the implementation of the guidelines:

  1. Log in to the vCenter Server using vSphere Web Client.
  2. Select Hosts and Clusters on the home screen.
  3. Select the cluster where you want to create the resource pool.
  1. Right-click on the resource pool and select New Resource Pool:

In order to create a resource pool, you need to have the following information in hand:

  • Name: This refers to the name of the resource pool.
  • Shares: This indicates the total number of shares to be allocated to the VMs in the resource pool.
  • Reservation: This indicates the minimum resources guaranteed to the VMs.
  • Reservation Type: If Expandable is checked and a VM is powered on that pushes the resource pool beyond its reservation, the resource pool can use resources from its parent or ancestors. If Expandable is not checked and a VM is powered on that pushes the resource pool beyond its reservation, the VM will not be allowed to power on.
  • Limit: This refers to the maximum number of resources any VM under this resource pool will get.

Similar options are available for memory configuration. Once this step is completed, you might see a yellow warning triangle, which suggests that something is incorrect.
