How to do it…

To monitor the disk command aborts using vSphere Client, follow these steps:

  1. Open up vSphere Web Client.
  2. Log in to the vCenter Server.
  3. Navigate to the Hosts and Clusters section.
  4. Select the host where you want to monitor the disk aborts.
  5. Now click on the Monitor tab, then the Performance tab.
  6. Select Advanced and Switch to Disk from the drop-down menu window.
  7. Click on Chart Options and select the Commands aborted counter.
  8. Click on OK, and now you can see the metric in the performance chart.

To monitor the disk command aborts using an SSH client such as PuTTY, follow these steps:

  1. Open up SSH client and log in to the ESXi Server.
  2. Run esxtop there.
  3. For the disk device error, type U.
  4. Now type F to change the settings and type 1 to select Error Stats. Hit Enter to return.

Once this is done, you can see the ABRTS/s field there. Monitor this field for the disk command aborts:

This counter tracks the SCSI aborts. Aborts generally occur because the array is taking far too long to respond to commands.
