How to do it…

There is a vRealize Operations Manager icon in the Administration section of the vSphere 6.5 home screen. We will use this icon to start the installation of VROPS:

  1. Go to http://www.vmware.com/download and download vRealize Operations Manager - Appliance installation OVF file.
  2. Click on the vRealize Operations Manager button from the home screen of the web client:
  1. Click on the link in the Basic Tasks section.
  2. Browse to find the vRealize Operations Manager - Appliance installation OVF file you downloaded from step 1. Click on Next.
  3. Enter a name for the VROPS VM and specify a datacenter or folder. Click on Next.
  4. Select the host that will run the VM. Click on Next.
  5. Review the template details and click on Next.

 

  1. Read and accept the license agreement. Click on Next.
  2. Choose the size of appliance you want to create based on the number of VMs you have. Click on Next.
  3. Pick the datastore that will hold the VM. Click on Next.
  4. Click on the network where the VM will be connected. Click on Next.
  5. Enter the network information for the VM and click on Next.
  6. Review all the settings for the VM and click on Finish.

The VROPS VM will take several minutes to create and boot. When it is done, browse to the IP address you specified in step 12.

  1. You will be presented with a Get Started screen with three options. Click on New Installation.
  2. This wizard will create a new VROPS cluster. Click on Next.
  3. Enter a password for the admin user, confirm, and then click on Next.
  4. Use the default certificate or install a certificate if you have one. Click on Next.
  5. Enter a name for the master node of the VROPS cluster and add an NTP server. Click on Next.
  6. Review the next steps, then click on Finish.

You will be presented with the vRealize Operations Manager Administration screen. The cluster will be in the process of being configured; wait until it is done. Then follow these steps:

  1. When the first node appears in the Nodes section, click on Start vRealize Operations Manager in the System Status section. This will take several minutes to start. When it finishes, you will be redirected to the VROPS login page.
  2. Log in using the admin user and the password from step 16.
  3. The configuration wizard will appear. Click on Next.
  4. Read and accept EULA. Click on Next.
  5. Enter a product key or choose Product Evaluation. Click on Next.
  6. Either join the CEIP or do not join, then click on Next.
  7. Click on Finish.
  8. You will be logged into the vRealize Operations Manager screen.
  9. In the Solutions section, click on VMware vSphere and click on cogs to configure the connection to your vCenter server.
  10. In the wizard, enter your vCenter information and click on Save Settings.

At this point, the screen should look similar to the following, with the collection state indicating:

Once VROPS has completed processing the objects in the environment, you can log into the IP address of the VROPS VM and view the results:

In this case, most of our VMs are healthy (green), but we have a few with warnings (yellow) and errors (red). You can click on the yellow or red squares to drill down to the VM to see the details of the issue.
