How to do it…

The first step is to download the Runecast software:

  1. Go to https://www.runecast.biz.
  2. Click on Free Trial on the main page.
  3. Fill in your information and click on Create Account.
  4. Once you are logged in, download the Runecast Analyzer (.ova).
  5. Log in to vSphere Web Client and go to the Hosts and Clusters view.
  6. Right-click on your cluster and select Deploy OVF Template....
  7. In the Deploy OVF Template wizard, select the .ovf file you downloaded. Click on Next.
  8. Enter a name and select a datacenter. Click on Next.
  9. Select a host or cluster. Click on Next.
  10. Review the details. Click on Next.
  11. Read and accept EULA. Click on Next.
  12. Choose your configuration based on the size of your environment. Click on next.
  13. Pick your datastore. Click on Next.
  14. Choose the network you want to use. Click on Next.
  15. Enter your network details. Click on Next.
  16. Review the settings. Click on Finish.

 

  1. The wizard will deploy the OVF and configure the appliance. This will take a few minutes. When it is done, power on the appliance and go to the IP address you assigned. Log in with the rcuser username and the password as Runecast!:

Now that you have deployed the appliance, connect it to your vCenter and run the analysis:

  1. Click on the cog at the top-right corner.
  2. Click on the vCenter Connection tab, then click on Add vCenter.
  3. Enter the FQDN or IP of your vCenter Server, the port, and the username and password. Click on Save.
  4. The system will connect to your vCenter server and show it in the list.
  5. Go back to Dashboard and click on the Analyze Now button at the top of the screen.

 

  1. After a couple of minutes, the screen should show the results of the analysis:

As you can see, Runecast has scanned 70 inventory objects, performed over 20 thousand checks, and has identified multiple issues. You can click on Inventory on the left-hand side to see the issues associated with each host or VM:

Clicking on an issue shows a summary of the issue and the reference link you can use to solve the issue. You can also click on the Ignore button to tell Runecast that you don't want to see this alert again.

You can also view where your configuration settings are in a VMware KB or check whether they are consistent with VMware Best Practices or the Security Hardening Recommendations:

Runecast also searches through the ESXi logs to find applicable KBs to your environment. You can click on the KBs discovered tab to see these results:
