Setting Up Project 2007

To set up Project Standard or Project Professional on your computer, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the Project Standard or Project Professional CD in your computer’s CD or DVD drive.

If the Project Setup program does not start automatically, click the Start button on the Windows taskbar and then click Run. Type X:setup.exe (where X is the name of your CD-ROM drive) and then click OK. Or, use Windows Explorer to open the contents of the CD-ROM and then double-click the setup.exe file.

If you are installing Office Project 2007 on Windows Vista, the AutoPlay window appears. Click Run Setup.exe. Then click Continue in the next security alert that appears.

The Microsoft Office Project Professional 2007 window appears, asking for your 25-character product key.

  2. Type your product key. It is either on the CD case, or it was provided as part of your license agreement.

After you type the final digit, a check mark confirms the correct product key.

  3. Click Continue.

  4. On the next page, read the Microsoft software license terms and then select the I Accept The Terms Of This Agreement check box. Click Continue.

  5. On the next page, choose the type of installation you want.

    • If no previous version of Microsoft Project is present on your computer, the choices are Install Now or Customize. If you click Install Now, installation begins immediately.

    • If you are upgrading from a previous version of Microsoft Project, the choices are Upgrade or Customize. If you click Upgrade, installation begins immediately.

    • If you click Customize, a window with four tabs appears. The Upgrade tab gives you the choice between removing or keeping the previous version of Microsoft Project on your computer. The Installation Options tab lets you specify which individual features should be installed. The File Location tab lets you specify the location where the project program files should be installed. The User Information tab provides fields for you to enter your name, initials, and organization. When finished with your customized settings, click Install Now.

The Installation Progress window shows the progress bar for the installation of Project 2007.

  6. In the window that states that Project 2007 has been successfully installed, click Close.

  7. Click Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office Project 2007.

Activating Project 2007

The activation process is designed to verify that your installation of Project 2007 is properly licensed. It checks that your product key is not in use on more computers than are permitted by the software license.

Project 2007 will open with full functionality 25 times before it requires activation—this is the activation "grace period." After this grace period expires, Project 2007 transitions to reduced functionality mode, in which Project 2007 operates like a viewer. You cannot create new projects or save changes to existing project files. When you obtain and enter your product key and activate Project 2007 after the grace period has expired, you can restore Project 2007 to full functionality again.

Until you activate, the Activation Wizard appears each time you open Project 2007. This wizard guides you through the activation process, which just takes a minute or so.

You can activate Project 2007 over the Internet or by phone. If you choose to activate by phone, the activation process could take longer.

To activate Project 2007, do the following:

  1. Start Project 2007. The Microsoft Office Project 2007 Activation Wizard appears each time you start Project 2007 until you have activated it.

You can also click Help, Activate Product.

If your installation of Project 2007 has already been activated, a message appears to this effect, in which case no further action is needed.

  2. Follow the steps in the wizard to activate Project 2007. Select whether you want to activate over the Internet or by telephone. Click the Next button and follow the instructions.

  3. On the next page, click Register Now to register your copy of Project 2007.

Registering Project 2007 is an optional step. However, it is recommended so that you can be notified if there are any important patches or other product information that you need to know about.

  4. Click Close to finish activating Project 2007.
