Assignment: Tone Your Castle Drawing

Using the perspective drawing you created of your own castle in Chapter 5, create a toned version on your own. The steps are as follows:

1. Isolate the silhouette of your castle.

2. Define the light and dark sides. Make sure the sides are tonally distinct—no mushy castles!

3. Create re-usable mask-holding layers defining the major structures of your castle.

4. Add cast shadows. When a shaped architectural element is casting a shadow, like the castle crenellations, use that shape to define the shadow.

5. Add cores to areas where the light side meets the dark side on rounded surfaces.

6. Create a layer to add your final darks, darkening the intersection of forms, downward-facing surfaces, and regions that receive less reflected light.

7. Add a lightened, thinned out version of your drawing set to Multiply at the top of the layer stack so that you can retain your line drawing.

With the form drawing complete, you now have the basis for applying photographic textures to your castle in Chapter 7.
