Planning and deploying apps with proper permissions and licenses

Once you have created an App Catalog site, you can purchase or upload apps. In order to use an app, a user must have a license. Some licenses and apps are free, while others may have costs associated with them. In order to install an app into a site, a user must be a site owner, though some apps require additional permissions (such as access to additional data sources or web services).

After you have initially mapped out which apps you will acquire for your organization, you will need to add the app to the catalog. After the app has been added to the catalog and exposed to the organization, you will need to decide whether the app is just made available or if it will be deployed directly to sites. Two deployment models are available for this:

  • Add an app to a catalog: In this model, apps are made available in the catalog, and site owners have the choice of adding them to their sites.
  • Deploy an app to a site: In this model, apps are directly installed into the sites, with no site collection administrator intervention.
