The CBS eye, the pictographic logo par excellence, suggests both the aperture of a
camera lens and the eye of the TV viewer. Designed by CBS creative director
William Golden and based on the “eye of God” symbols Amish farmers paint on
their barns to ward off evil, the logo first appeared on television on November 16,
1951, as a black-and-white symbol overlaid on a photograph of a cloud-filled sky.
Since then, the logo has become colored and animated, but its basic shape has not
changed in fifty years.
