The Handspring logo
begins with rudimentary
pencil sketches. Here,
designer P.J. Nidecker
repeatedly draws an H,
the first letter of the
client’s name. A
conceptual theme
emerges: the H becomes
a spring, which refers to
the company’s use of
“springboards,” modules
that expand PDA’s
capabilities, and to the
company’s desired image,
one of energy and verve.
Laser proofs reveal
different interpretations
of the spring concept,
all based on the letter
H. In the first, the H
performs a back flip,
while in the second,
it transforms into a
tightly wound coil.

Before reaching its final form, the Handspring logo underwent over one
hundred different iterations. Some changes were major, such as a shift
away from a monogram to a stylized figure; others were mere details,
such as deciding how big the dot above the letter “i” should be.

The final Logo
The chosen mark, which has
since been nicknamed “Flip.”
The colors green, blue and
yellow convey a sense of
youth and vibrancy.
The third approach
refers to the spring-like
action of a bouncing
ball, while the fourth
depicts an H composed
of cross-sections of
springs.
Only the fifth, a stylized
character caught mid-
cartwheel, moves away
from a literal rendering
of an H. It is ultimately
chosen as the approach
to pursue. To stress the
mark’s humanlike
appearance, the figure
is removed from the box
that once surrounded it.
Client
Handspring is a company that develops handheld
personal digital assistants.
What Works
The Handspring logo, a stylized stick figure cart
wheeling above a logotype, visually conveys the
attitude of youth and vitality.
