From the Heart
It all started with the AIGA “Y” conference in San Diego
entitled
Connectivity.
At the conference, many people
focused their presentations on collaboration and connecting
with other people,” recalls illustrator Cathie Bleck. “It was a
real energizing experience.” After leaving the conference,
all three collaborators were quite inspired and decided to
get together for lunch to discuss a possible joint endeavor.
“I thought we could do something that I would design and
print, Cathie would illustrate, and Anne would write—
something that displayed all of our individual talents in
one piece,” says designer Michael Osborne. Bleck adds, “At
lunch, we talked a lot about what the piece would be about.
As we were looking at the dessert menu, we noticed that
one of the desserts was called Three More Bites. It was a
revelation! Our book would include three poems, three
pieces of art, and we would call it
Three More Bites.
The project started with writer Anne Telford. “We asked her
to lead the way,” notes Osborne. “She sent over several
short poems, and we narrowed it down to three.” Both the
illustrator and writer worked together to select just the
right ones for the small, yet intimate book. “I have a large
body of poetry to draw from and was very open to having
Cathie choose what she related to,” says Telford. “In her
illustrations, Cathie really got to the heart and soul of what
I was writing about.” Portraying three central female fig-
ures, the illustrations add richness to each page. “It was in
the spirit of working with Cathie and the inspiration we
drew from the women in our lives,” shares Telford.
The type, subtly displayed in warm gray, is both eloquent
and graceful. “It is real easy on your eye, and the writing
and illustration still remain the heroes,” adds Osborne.
Once complete, the entire edition was sent to the illustrator
and writer to hand-sign.

What Works
Because of the quality and attention to detail, the
collaborative promotional piece drew attention from
everyone who received it. All of the special touches and
care that were put into the piece made it something worth
holding on to. “I have gotten so many e-mails, and a lot
of them were similar in tone,” remarks Osborne. “The
responses, much like the piece itself, were warm and
heartfelt.” The handcrafted piece really celebrates
illustration, design, and writing and inspires others
to do the same.

box that was stuffed and wrapped with
a specially designed band. Only 300
were produced.
