Process
Knowing the Movies.com site aimed to reach a wide audience, designer John
Smallman set out to create a logo that was general enough to appeal to a range of
age groups, cultures, and aesthetic tastes. He began by sketching designs based on
film reels, but felt they were too similar to other movie websites. Next, he shifted his
focus to the site’s tagline, “Don’t get left in the dark,” and explored different designs
based on spotlights. Literal illustrations, however, seemed too cliché to Smallman so
he tried a more abstract approach using type. In Illustrator, he created a triangular-
shaped spotlight, then placed a reversed-out m at its base. After experimenting with
different typefaces, he chose Helvetica Neue Heavy Extended, as its bold, sans serif
forms were easily readable within the spotlight shape. He chose a lowercase m
because the curved strokes suggest a row of movie theater seats.
What Works
The logo, a lowercase m cut out of a triangular shape, evokes the spotlight created
by a film projector shining over a row of seats in a darkened movie theater.
