The Smart Shutter II Accessory —
Fitting the Shutter Motor

Note: BEFORE FITTING THE SMART SHUTTER II SYSTEM TO A PLATINUM PANAFLEX CAMERA IT IS ESSENTIAL TO FIRST RELEASE THE SHUTTER LOCKING LEVER. This can be found inside the camera just above the movement.

If using a PANASTAR I camera the speed selector must be set to “R” and on a PANASTAR II it must be set to “000.”

Fitting the Shutter Control Motor

Disconnect the power supply from the camera.

Unscrew and remove the engraved quadrant above the shutter control knob on the rear of the camera. Flip out the shutter control lever.

Mount and attach the Smart Shutter Motor (SSM) using the knurled knob on the top of the unit to align the motor with the shutter control knob.

If the required exposure change is to exceed two stops (the maximum possible by means of the shutter alone) then it will be necessary also to adjust the T-Stop. To do this fit either the Separate Remote Motor (SRM) or the Remote Focus and T-Stop Motor (RFTT) supplied with the Smart Shutter II kit. Alternatively it is possible to link into the F.T.Z.S.A.C. system.

Connect the following cables:

• Shutter motor to the Smart Shutter Receiver Box (SSRB).

• T-Stop Motor, if fitted, to the SSRB.

• Camera accessory socket to the SSRB.

• 24 volt power supply from the camera or a battery to the SSRB.

• Shutter control unit to the SSRB.

Calibrating the Shutter Motor

To check the calibration reconnect the power supply to the camera, set the camera digital display to read fps and shutter angle and run the camera at 24 fps.

Turn the knurled knob until the minimum shutter opening is obtained.

At this point the engraved shutter angle markings (seen from the inside of the camera) should read about 5° less than the minimum shutter angle. Should the shutter angle markings not read about 5° less than the minimum shutter angle loosen the mechanical stop slide to the left of the knurled knob, turn the knob to the right as far as it will go and retighten. (Note: This setting operation will normally have been carried out by PANAVISION Inc. or its representatives before the equipment left their premises.)
