Two types of iris rod brackets are available to support a matte box and long and heavy lenses when appropriate. A short, lightweight, type is available for use when hand holding and a long type is for use when supporting heavy lenses.
To fit iris rods that support a matte box only, slide the short bracket into the vertical slides situated on the motor side of the lens. The iris rods and the matte box are locked in position by locking rings which should only be tightened ‘finger tight.’
PANAFLEX cameras are normally supplied with three pairs of iris rods 5", 7" and 9" long. The most suitable length pair for a particular lens should be selected and fitted onto the iris rod bracket. PLATINUM and GII PANAFLEX cameras may be supplied with iris rods made of carbon fibre to give added lightness.
To support a heavy lens fit the iris rod bracket to the camera (but do not completely tighten) and select a pair of iris rods of suitable length.
Fit the lens and tighten the lens mount locking clamp in the normal manner. Initially fit only the top iris rod (remove bottom one if already fitted) and slide lens support bracket into place. Engage and lightly tighten the captured locking screw to attach the support bracket to the underside of the lens.
Thread the second iris rod through the lens support bracket and into the iris rod bracket. Tighten the iris rod bracket attachment to the camera, the lens support bracket to the lens and both iris rod locking rings, checking that no part is under any strain.
Note: In an emergency the short iris rod bracket can be used to support long and heavy lenses but it is not a recommended practice. In such an instance it is particularly important not to tighten the bracket to the camera before the lens support and both iris rods have been fitted.
