Using the Collapse Face or Edge command

The Collapse Face or Edge command can be used to edit the mesh maps on mesh objects. As the name suggests, it collapses a face (or an edge) to a single point and the neighboring faces will be modified accordingly. The Collapse Face or Edge tool button can be found in the Mesh Edit panel on the Mesh tab in the 3D Modeling workspace, as shown in the following screenshot:

Figure 14. 76: Collapse Face or Edge tool button location in the 3D Modeling workspace

The following is a step-by-step example of collapsing a face in a box mesh object:

  1. Start the Collapse Face or Edge command and then click on the desired mesh face to be collapsed.
  2. As shown in the following diagram, the middle mesh face is collapsed to a single point and the command terminates, as shown in the following diagram:

Figure 14. 77: Using the Collapse Face or Edge command

As shown in the previous example, the face is collapsed to a single point, and the other neighboring faces were automatically triangulated to accommodate the new change.

Now that we have learned how to manipulate the faces of the mesh object and how to close holes in the mesh object, let's have a look at how to control the mesh smoothing process by adding creases and using the refine command.
