The Paper tab on the Page Setup dialog box (see Figure 16.3) allows you to choose from several common paper sizes (Letter, Legal, or A4, for example). The Margins tab lets you pick whether you want the printing to run along the short edge of the paper (Portrait orientation) or the long edge (Landscape orientation).
As with margins, the settings for paper size and orientation apply to sections. If your document has only one section, the size and orientation you choose applies to the entire document.
By judiciously choosing the page size, you can use a few tricks for special effects.
Tip from
Word can print to within 1/8 inch of the bottom of the sheet on a LaserJet printer—an important discovery if you're trying to print labels that extend to the bottom of the sheet. On the Paper tab, select a Paper Size of Legal 8 1/2×14 in. Then in the Paper Source box, pick Manual Feed. If you manually feed a regular letter-sized sheet, the print nearly touches the bottom of the sheet.
Other effects are possible as well. For example, when printing envelopes, adjust the page size to extend beyond the borders of the envelope, and you can frequently print all the way up to the edge, or even "bleed" over the edge. Experiment a bit. Remember that envelopes can often be fed either short-end first or long-end first.
