Saving and Restoring Personal Settings

After you've painstakingly customized every Office application, what happens if you get a new PC? System backups can preserve your data files, but you need to take an extra step to ensure you capture all options and preferences in a format you easily can restore to a new machine. Microsoft makes two utilities that can assist in this chore:

  • Save My Settings Wizard— The best choice for Office users in small businesses, home offices, and other environments not managed by full-time IT staff. This simple utility (a free download) saves your settings in a file and stores that file on a server at Microsoft's Office Update site.

  • Office Profile Wizard— Intended for administrators who want to save an Office user profile that represents a standard or semicustom configuration, which they can then deploy to multiple desktops. This utility, also free, requires extensive manual configuration but is highly customizable. It's included as part of the Office Resource Kit.

To download either of these utilities, visit Microsoft's Office Update site by selecting Help, Office on the Web from any Office Program.

Note

Windows XP includes a Files and Settings Transfer Wizard that is Office aware.
