Using MSN Messenger to Communicate with Contacts

Outlook 2002 integrates with the MSN Messenger Instant Messaging utility, enabling you to communicate with contacts immediately, in a Messenger window, rather than through e-mail.

Before you can take advantage of this Outlook feature, you must enable MSN Messenger integration. To do so, select Tools, Options, click the Other tab, and check the Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook box.

With this option, Outlook will look for a value in the IM Address field for any Contact item. When you open a contact record or an e-mail message, Outlook checks to see whether that person is available via MSN Messenger. If so, you'll see a bar at the top of the message or contact record; click to open a Messenger window and begin composing an instant message.
