Viewing Outlook Data in PivotTables and PivotCharts

In previous Access versions, you could view the contents of an Access database as a PivotTable by exporting it to Excel. Access 2002 builds PivotTable and PivotChart capabilities directly into Access. You can view any table, query, or form in either PivotTable or PivotChart view to analyze the data. You can also save PivotTable and PivotChart views as Data Access Pages viewable in a browser.

To create a PivotTable view of a table, open the table in Datasheet view and then choose View, PivotTable View. As shown in Figure 35.9, you can drag columns from the Field List to the "drop zones" on the PivotTable canvas to build the PivotTable.

Figure 35.9. Access PivotTables work much like their Excel counterparts. The Totals entry appears because the Inventory column heading was clicked to set up a summary value.

Access PivotTables are a powerful way to analyze data interactively, just as they are in Excel. Excel PivotTables are easier to use for simple lists; use Access PivotTables when you need to combine data from multiple sources for analysis.
