Troubleshooting

Back to Square One

Q1:You've customized menus and toolbars a bit too much, and now you can't find several key commands.
A1: You can restore any toolbar, including the main menu bar, to its default settings. Select Tools, Customize, and click the Toolbars tab. Choose the toolbar whose customized settings you want to remove (select Menu Bar for the main menus) and click Reset. Word users can specify whether the change applies to the current document only or to the template in use.

Broken Shortcut Menus?

Q1:You've customized shortcut menus in Word, PowerPoint, or Access, but they don't behave as you expect.
A1: Be sure you customized the correct menu. When you edit tables, for example, Word uses different shortcut menus depending on whether you're working with a table heading, text within a table cell, an entire cell, or the whole table. If you want the Paste Special command to be available in each of these instances, you must customize the shortcut menus for each of these specific contexts.

Restoring Default Shortcut Keys

Q1:You inadvertently replaced a useful system shortcut and want to reset the default shortcut.
A1: When you assign a keyboard shortcut to a specific function, it removes that shortcut for any other function that uses that combination. To restore the shortcut, select the original function and assign the proper key combination. To restore every default Word key combination, select Tools, Customize, click the Keyboard button, and click the Reset All button in the Customize Keyboard dialog box.

Word Changes Text Mysteriously

Q1:As you create a document, you discover that Word is consistently changing some words or abbreviations you type. You've checked thoroughly, and you know the text that triggers the change is not in the AutoCorrect list. What's up?
A1: Word is aggressively changing text, using a well-hidden spell-checking option. To stop this behavior, select Tools, AutoCorrect Options, click the AutoCorrect tab, and clear the check mark from the Automatically Use Suggestions from the Spelling Checker box.
