Chapter 6. Using Workshop

Workshop is an important part of our look at testing and assessing with Moodle. So far, we have only looked at tests and questions with pre-determined responses or those that were only assessed by the teacher. Here, we will look at Workshop, which offers a way to interact and assess students through their submitted work as well as offering the option of self-assessment, peer assessment, and teacher assessment.

Workshop was one of the first contributed modules in Moodle, and it is one of the more complex modules available due to the sheer number of options available. It was intended to be a module where students would be able to upload assignments and their classmates and teacher would review then assess the submitted work. It has many settings and functions, and requires several steps to be completed before it can be used in class, but once it is finished, it will be one more way you can assess your students.

In this chapter, we will:

  • Explore Workshop's features
  • Create a sample Workshop
  • Look at self-assessment, peer assessment, and teacher assessment options in Workshop

Why use Workshop

Before you decide to use Workshop, you need to come up with an idea of how and why you are going to use it. Are you going to use it to have your students simply upload files and assess them yourself? Will you have them peer-assess the work? Are you going to have the students do any self-assessment? Will you give them a sample assignment to practice how to effectively assess work? If so, how many? How long will they have to submit their work? These are all things you will need to think about before you begin to use Workshop. Once you have decided on how you want to use it, you need to locate it.
