Summary

Lesson is a complex and somewhat quirky tool that can be useful for a variety of reasons. The Lesson module takes a lot of time to get used to, but once you start using it, and if it works for your situation, it can become an exceptional tool for teaching and learning. While its applications for testing are solid, there are issues, such as limited question types and features available from Quiz-based items that are missing in Lesson-based ones.

The ability to create simple or complex multi-branched Lessons, questions, and clusters for students to work through, is the key function of Lesson. These features are what sets Lesson apart from other applications, and, while Quiz, is a more robust testing option, Lesson certainly has its own strong points. We have only looked at using Lesson for testing here, but it was mainly created as a self-guided learning tool.

Finally, it is important to start using Lesson on a small scale, for example, starting with a limited number of branches, and slowly building up your skills and knowledge until you are confident that your Lesson-based tests or activities are well-designed and clear, and what you want for your students. The more you practice using Lesson, the better you will get at putting together more useful and advanced paths for your students to follow.

In the next chapter, we will be looking at another module called Workshop, which is good for self-assessment and group assessment.
