Moderating Data Usage with Data Sense

Data usage can be costly when users exceed their data plan limits, or when the phone is using a roaming connection. Thus, it is important to consider the amount of data that your app transfers when not using a Wi-Fi connection.

New to Windows Phone 8 is the Data Sense feature that allows you to determine when users are over their data plan limits, and to discontinue data usage or to postpone tasks that transfer data until a Wi-Fi connection is available.

Data Sense allows users to specify their data plan limit. Data Sense monitors data usage in relation to the specified limit. With this information, your app can help users to save money by reducing data usage in some situations.

Note

Data Sense requires that a phone come installed with a Data Sense app, which is optional for mobile operators. As a result, users of your app might not have the Data Sense app on their phones. Without the app, a user is unable to enter the data limit.

When a user’s data limit is unknown, you can still use the Data Sense API to determine whether the phone is using a Wi-Fi connection or roaming. You cannot, however, use the Data Sense API to determine whether the phone is approaching the user’s data limit, or if it is over.
