atch them off-guard.
Tell them the pages you’d like them to read. Then tell them you will be calling on people at
various stages to answer a question—most likely bespectacled people. Invariably, someone will
discreetly take off her glasses to avoid being called on. Bring humor to the action by pointing
out that you are not as dumb as you look (if you don’t mind self-deprecating humor).
After a few minutes, call on someone wearing glasses to tell you what she remembers most from
what she has read thus far. She will tell the group how far she has read, and then share the most
salient point. Make a comment or two, and then tell the class to resume reading from the point
at which the respondent left off.
Again, wait a few minutes. This time, interrupt them by asking if they feel that an instructor has
the right to change her mind. (If you are a woman, you can take adage-advantage by prefacing
this question with another question: Ask them if they know what a woman’s prerogative is.
Most will have heard that a woman’s prerogative is to change her mind. Then dramatically say,
“That’s right! I can change my mind! And I just have.”) Tell them you’ve changed your mind
and for this section, someone not wearing glasses will be called on.
Repeat the process of asking the second person how far she has read and what stands out in her
mind from those pages. Comment. Allow a few more minutes of reading from the finish-point
cited by the second respondent. Then call on someone either bespectacled or not to share the
third point of interest.
Because they are not certain whom you will select for the third input, they are more likely to be
ready and well-read.
