Most of us know people who start their privacy-invasion with, “I know it’s none of my
business . . .” The next word in their sentence will always be the word “but.” Then they will go
on to ask the question that really is none of their business. Yes, you can agree with them; you
can say, “You are right! It’s none of your business.” And you can refuse to answer them. Doing
so, however, may alienate someone with whom you have to work every day or sit beside in class.
To avoid using a caustic reply or to sidestep the question because you can’t think of a verbal exit
fast enough, have some stock responses ready. For example, “I promised my mother (or boss or
husband or partner) that I’d never reveal the answer to that question.”
Historical example: Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox was always being asked by well-
meaning, patriotic Americans whether or not the country was going to enter World War II.
Secretary Knox would lean down and whisper conspiratorially, “Can you keep a secret?”
The asker would assure him immediately, “Oh, yes, Mr. Secretary. I can.”
“Good!” Secretary Knox would announce. “So can I!”
