ssign the reading of a biography.
It seems that every famous, wealthy, and/or successful person has had to overcome serious
obstacles to achieve what she did. (Lance Armstrong is just one perfect example.) Let
participants choose whatever figure interests them, from whatever world intrigues them. Their
assignment: to record the strategies employed by the famous person whenever she doubted her
own ability to meet a challenge.
Keep a class notebook of these strategies by having each person share one strategy and then
recording it in the notebook while the next person is sharing hers.
Note: If you will only see the participants for two or three days, reading a complete biography
will be difficult. Suggest instead that they do a quick Google search and read just one article.

Who can argue with the Shakespeare wisdom that commands, “To thine own self be true”? It’s
hard to be true, though, when you are not sure what your own self is. This assignment, which
can last a whole year if you wish it to, asks participants to respond to questions about their
feelings in specific situations. Even if you only use the assignment once, though, ask participants
to share one thing they learned about themselves.*
