o the usual: Appoint.
The old standby, simply having the instructor appoint the leader, is certainly an option. Put a
little spin on your appointment: If you teach elementary or middle school students, lend
splendor to the job. Have a cape or crown or wand available for the leader. If you work
with older students or adults, give them a list of leadership quotes as a token of your
appreciation. The quotations will extend their thinking about leadership. (Note: Check the
Appendix. You’ll find a list of leadership quotes to use as rewards for those you have chosen for
the leadership role.)
Brainteaser:
Can you think of a scenario that would apply to these identical twins? Kristine
celebrates her birthday on one day and her older brother, Tom, celebrates his two days later.
Answer: Think of their mother going into labor as she crossed time zones. Let’s say she went from Guam to Hawaii, and
Tom was born on March 1. Shortly afterward, the mother crossed the International Date Line and delivered Kristine, the
younger twin. In the crossing, the date would be February 28. In leap years, Kristine celebrates her birthday two days before
the older twin.

To reduce any anxiety about having to serve as a team leader, select two people to handle
the job. They can do this sharing in any number of ways: They can split the tasks, they can split
the time, they can switch back and forth, or each of them can work with their own half of
the group.
