This test for understanding really is a test, but you will need an even number of groups in order
for it to work. Have each group prepare a 20-question (neatly written) quiz. Make certain the
groups are all moving along at approximately the same rate. (Issue warnings, such as “By now,
you should have ten questions.”)
Then have the groups exchange their quizzes. The answers from a given group will be returned
to the group that wrote the exam. That same group will correct the exams and announce the
scores.

Without referring to a dictionary, can you find the five misspelled words?

Initiate a discussion centering on this incomplete statement: “Someone who earns a passing
grade in this class should be knowledgeable about . . .” Give the class one thing you believe is
required to pass the class—one bit of knowledge that is a sine qua non needed for course-
completion.
Ask them to work in small groups to determine what other knowledge-bits should be added as
determinants of course success. Compile a master list and use it at the end of the class to review.
