rrange informational interviews.
Even if you don’t personally know the power-players who could help convince participants that
the course can impact their futures, you can still make phone calls. (You’d be surprised how
many business people and college professors are flattered and willing to speak to students as
part of the informational-interview process.) When you make your calls, explain that you’ll need
only 15–30 minutes of the individual’s time, and that the student’s interview can be done by
phone or e-mail. Set these up and invite participants to take advantage of them.
Note: The more experts you have, the less likely that any one of them will be over-burdened. In
fact, you can assign five students to each of the experts, and then leave it up to them to decide
when and if they wish to follow through with the informational interview. More experts will
mean that each will have only one or two commitments.

evelop connections with former students.
At the end of each class, ask participants if they would be willing to serve as mentors for future
class members. Obtain the e-mail addresses and/or phone numbers for those generous enough
to help others. Then, when you meet your next class, distribute the list. Encourage students to
ask questions, explore ideas, and seek mini-tutorials or short professional-coaching time with
their mentors. (Be certain that mentors are evenly assigned to participants. One way to avoid
over-burdening any one person is to tell new class participants to choose a surname on the list
that is alphabetically closest to their own name.)
