Have you ever wanted a “technical-to-English” dictionary? Sometimes we find that while knowledge is paramount, it isn't everything—we still have to make other people understand what we're talking about, and vice versa.

This lesson provides an introduction to how computers work and defines some common computer and Macintosh terms. It covers some basics, and you may already be familiar with its contents. However, we think that even if you use it just as a refresher, this material will help you discuss Macintosh support questions with your customers.

Before you can locate or fix trouble in an Apple product, you must be able to distinguish normal from abnormal operation. By familiarizing yourself with normal operation, you will be better able to recognize the problems your less technically savvy customers try to describe.

This lesson covers the most basic physical components of a computer system, the basic elements of the operating system, and how files are written and stored. It also provides an introduction to what happens when a computer starts up, which is key to troubleshooting a computer that isn't starting up properly.

If you think you already know this material, as a “pretest,” try your hand at the Computer Theory and Terminology Worksheet included on the CD (CTT_pretest.pdf). If you complete the worksheet without error or consulting the text, congratulations! You can skip to the next lesson.
