Lesson 13. About CRT iMac and eMac Models

Reference FilesChapter Test 13 (Chapter_Test_13.pdf)
TimeThis lesson takes approximately 1 hour to complete.
GoalsDescribe the CRT iMac models and eMac models Explain the differences in the various CRT iMac models and eMac models

The CRT iMac models combine a PowerPC G3 microprocessor and a 15-inch CRT display in one unit. The original Bondi Blue 233 MHz model, introduced in May 1998, was followed by models in different colors and with different features, and ranging in processor speed from 266 MHz to 700 MHz.

In addition to color and processor speed, CRT iMac models vary from each other in the type of memory modules used (SO-DIMM or DIMM), the cache, the size of the hard disk, the type of optical drive, the graphics card, the expansion possibilities, and whether or not connectors are available for external video.

With the advent of the PowerPC G4 microprocessor, the iMac's display changed to a flat-panel LCD rather than a CRT. See Lesson 17, “About LCD iMac Models.”

Introduced in April 2002, the eMac combines a PowerPC G4 microprocessor and a 17-inch CRT display. While all eMac models share the same all-in-one case design, they vary from one another in their processor speed, the type of memory modules, the cache, the size of the hard disk, the type of optical drive, the graphics card, the AirPort option, and the type of video connectors.

The following charts outline the major technical differences among the CRT iMac models and eMac models. Use these charts to distinguish between various models and to determine the capabilities of each.
