The PowerBook G4 notebook computers include a PowerPC G4 processor, FireWire, USB, and support for AirPort wireless Internet connections and networking.
There are several ways to identify the model of PowerBook G4. One distinguishing factor is the size of the display; the PowerBook G4 comes in 12-, 15-, and 17-inch models. You can distinguish the Digital Visual Interface (DVI) models by the presence of a DVI port. You can distinguish the Gigabit Ethernet model from the previous PowerBook G4 computer by its keyboard layout, the rear port cover (which has a set of vents in the middle), and the lack of vents on the bottom of the computer. Some models are distinguishable only by the processor speed. Check the sticker inside the battery bay or use System Profiler to determine the processor speed.
The PowerBook G4 models produced in 2001 and 2002 were made with a rugged titanium housing. In 2003, Apple changed the PowerBook G4 housing to aluminum and introduced the illuminated keyboard. Available as a standard feature on all 17-inch models, and as an option for 15-inch models, the illuminated keyboard is controlled by a built-in ambient light sensor that detects low-light conditions and automatically illuminates the keyboard keys to make typing easier. Illuminated keyboard models are easily distinguished by the appearance of keyboard illumination controls on the F8, F9, and F10 keys.
