Apple Service Diagnostic

Like Apple Hardware Test, Apple Service Diagnostic (ASD) works within Open Firmware to perform low-level hardware tests. However, it is designed specifically for Mac models incapable of booting into Mac OS 9. It was first introduced in June 2002 for use with Xserve systems. Apple later released ASD for 2003 models of PowerBook, iMac, Power Mac, and Xserve (Slot Load) systems. Make sure you are using the version of ASD that corresponds to the Mac model you want to test.

If you suspect your computer has a hardware issue, the information that Apple Service Diagnostic provides can help identify the trouble. If ASD detects an issue, an error is displayed. Make a note of the error before proceeding. If ASD does not detect a hardware failure, the issue may be software related.

ASD Access and Documentation

AASPs can download the appropriate version of Apple Service Diagnostic, along with a Read Me file and either a test results guide or a user's guide. After reviewing these documents, you will be able to complete the following exercise.
