Opening an iMac G5

Whether you are adding memory or an AirPort Extreme Card to your iMac G5, the first step is to remove the back cover of the computer. Be sure to follow the ESD guidelines spelled out in Lesson 4, “Safe Working Procedures and General Maintenance.”

1.
Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu.

2.
Disconnect all cables and unplug the power cord from the computer.

NOTE

You must unplug the AC power cord to prevent the iMac from turning on during the upgrade procedure.

3.
Place a soft, clean towel or cloth on the desk or surface. Hold the sides of the computer and slowly lay the computer face down on the towel.

4.
Using a Phillips #1 screwdriver, loosen the three captive screws by turning counterclockwise until they stop turning.

NOTE

These screws are captive; they are part of the display/bezel assembly and cannot be removed.

5.
Holding the back cover by the metal foot, tilt the cover up and lift it off the computer. Set the back cover aside.

6.
Put on your ESD wrist strap.

7.
Ground yourself. Touch the metal surface of the power supply on the inside of the computer to discharge any static electricity.

NOTE

Always discharge static electricity before you touch any parts or install any components inside the computer. To avoid generating static electricity, do not walk around the room until you have finished installing the part and closed the computer.
