The side access panel must be removed so you can access other internal components.

NOTE
Make sure the latch is in the up position before you replace the access panel. If the latch is down, the access panel will not seat correctly in the enclosure.
The air deflector is a clear plastic cover that promotes smooth airflow for all cooling zones inside the Power Mac G5. The air deflector can easily be removed to access all internal components, but it must always be in place when the computer is running, or the computer may overheat and shut down.

NOTE
To replace the air defiector, insert the three tabs on the bottom edge of the defiector into the three slots in the bottom frame of the enclosure. Then swing the defiector up fiush against the top frame of the enclosure.
NOTE
Make sure you reinstall the air defiector before replacing the access panel. If the air defiector is not installed, the computer will not function properly.
The Power Mac G5 (late 2004) comes standard with a SuperDrive.

11. | Disconnect the optical drive ribbon cable from the logic board. (The cable connector is located under the media shelf that holds the optical drive.) |

13. | Place the fingers of one hand inside the opening for the optical drive cable and push the edge of the drive forward. The drive will move part way out of the media shelf. |

15. | Route the drive ribbon cable out through the opening in the media shelf, and remove the drive and ribbon cable from the computer. Set the optical drive aside. |
1. | Return the faulty optical drive to Apple in the packaging provided. |
2. | Install the replacement optical drive following the instructions in the service manual. |
3. | Verify that everything works correctly by starting up the computer, running AHT, and doing a few user tasks that involve the optical drive (such as installing software or burning a disc in iTunes). |
