Taking Apart an iBook G4

At each stage of the Take Apart procedure, if there are special notes and information, we'll let you know; otherwise, we proceed component to component, from the outside in.

Battery

The lithium ion (LiIon) battery provides power to the iBook when alternating current (AC) is not present. Whenever you are opening an iBook G4, the first step is to remove the battery.

1.
Place the computer on a clean, flat surface.

2.
Shut down the computer and wait 30 minutes before continuing.

NOTE

Warning: Always shut down the computer before opening it to avoid damaging its internal components or causing injury. After you shut down the computer, the internal components can be very hot. Let the computer cool down before continuing.

3.
Disconnect the power cord and any other cables connected to the computer.

4.
Put on the grounded ESD wrist strap.

5.
Close the computer, turn it over, and locate the battery latch. Use a coin to turn the battery latch 1ΒΌ4-turn clockwise to unlock the battery. Gently remove the battery.

Removing the battery will prevent you from turning on the computer accidentally.

NOTE

Warning: Removing the battery before shutting down the computer may result in data loss.

Bottom Case

Unless it is physically damaged, it's rarely necessary to replace the bottom case of an iBook G4. However, gaining access to other internal components often requires the removal of the bottom case as a preliminary step.

6.
Using a 2.0 mm hex driver, remove the three screws and set them aside in a screw tray.

NOTE

The two screws nearest the back have 20 mm shafts, whereas the one near the center has a 10 mm shaft. Be sure to replace them in the correct holes during reassembly. To avoid damaging the case, be careful that the screwdriver tip does not slip out of the screw head during removal.

7.
Using a straightened metal paper clip, pry up the three rubber feet from the metal sockets and discard the feet.

NOTE

When reassembling the computer, do not reuse the feet. Install three new rubber feet.

8.
Using a Phillips #0 screwdriver, remove the three identical screws from the metal sockets and set them aside in a screw tray.

9.
Using a nylon probe tool, lift the metal sockets out of the plastic bottom case and set them aside in a screw tray.

NOTE

When reassembling the computer, note that the metal sockets are keyed. Rotate them until they sit flat against the bottom case.

10.
Using a Phillips #0 screwdriver, remove the two identical screws next to the battery connector and set them aside in a screw tray.

11.
Note the locations of the slots on the bottom case (shown from two different angles in the following figure).

The computer frame has tabs that fit into slots within the bottom case (six tabs in front, two on each side, three in back). When using a nylon probe tool to pry off the bottom case, it helps to know where the slots are as you free the tabs from the slots.

12.
Starting at the battery compartment, use a nylon probe tool to carefully pry up the bottom case from the computer.

NOTE

Warning: To avoid damaging the sleep light and other delicate components, do not insert the nylon probe tool too far into the computer as you free the bottom case from the computer. Use just the tip of the nylon probe tool to pry up the bottom case.

13.
Carefully work the nylon probe tool around the corners of the bottom case.

The bottom case fits snugly. Use only moderate force to remove the tabs from the slots.

14.
In the battery compartment, lift up the corner of the bottom case, and use a nylon probe tool or jeweler's fiathead screwdriver to gently pry up the slot from the inner tabs on the frame.

15.
Loosen the tabs near the optical drive last.

16.
Pull up on the I/O port side of the bottom case.

17.
Placing the nylon probe tool nearly parallel to the optical drive's slot load opening, carefully free the case from the remaining tabs at the slot drive side of the computer.

NOTE

When reassembling the computer, be careful not to pinch any cables as you press the bottom case back onto the computer. Check that the bottom case shows no raised surfaces and is fully snapped into place before installing the remaining screws, sockets, and feet.

18.
If you are replacing any additional parts at this time, remove the two springs from the battery compartment so they do not fall out and get lost.

NOTE

When reassembling the computer, make sure that the two springs in the battery compartment are in place before installing the bottom case. Each spring has a plastic cap on one end. The cap should fit securely on the spring, and the curved side of the cap should be positioned against the inner frame. The springs have a small amount of grease on them; do not wipe away the grease.

When You Are Finished

1.
Replace the bottom case following the instructions in the service manual.

2.
Verify that the system works correctly by starting up the system, running AHT, and doing a few user tasks, such as copying a file in the Finder.

NOTE

You can use the Take Apart checklist on the CD (takeapartlist.pdf) to verify proper reassembly.
