Video In/Out

Most Apple computers have two ways to deliver the video signal to an external display, such as a television, VCR, projector, or monitor:

  • You can send the RGB signal through the VGA/SVGA port to Apple and third-party RGB monitors, as well as to televisions and projectors that support RGB video input.

  • You can send the signal through the S-video port to VCRs, televisions, and projectors with S-video ports.

All currently shipping Apple computers have video-in via FireWire. All Power Mac G4 models have video-out via video card. Video-out via built-in port is available on the iMac (Early 2001), iMac (Summer 2001), iMac (Flat Panel), eMac, all currently shipping or in-warranty PowerBook models, and iBook models since the first FireWire model.

External Monitor

Many portable models have a video out port, so you can connect a monitor directly with a VGA-style adapter (shown below) or other external video device, such as a video projector. If you have an older Macintosh-compatible monitor, you can connect it using the VGA-to-Macintosh video adapter. For newer Macintosh desktop and portable models, you may also need an optional adapter.

When an external monitor is connected, you can either have the same image appear on both the internal display and the external monitor (known as video mirroring) or use the external monitor to extend the size of the Mac OS desktop (known as dual display mode).
