Installing an AirPort Extreme Card

All Power Mac G5 models are AirPort Extreme–ready. You may install only the AirPort Extreme Card in the Power Mac G5; older AirPort Cards do not work in this computer.

The following installation process is extremely simple. It assumes you have already removed the Power Mac G5 computer's access panel and air deflector, and grounded yourself following the steps on the previous pages.

1.
Locate the AirPort Extreme Card slot.

2.
Position the AirPort Extreme Card with the Apple logo facing the top of the case. Placing a hand on each side of the card, guide the card down into the logic board connector, making sure to align the front edge of the card's connector with the front of the logic board connector.

3.
Carefully attach the coaxial antenna wire to the port on the end of the AirPort Extreme Card.

NOTE

The AirPort Extreme Card antenna wire is stowed underneath the sheet metal divider with a clip. Remove the wire from the clip before attaching it to the card.

4.
Replace the air deflector and access panel.

5.
Attach the AirPort Extreme antenna to the AirPort antenna port on the back panel. To adjust reception, you can rotate the antenna a full 360 degrees.

NOTE

Unlike the Power Mac G4 tower models, the Power Mac G5 has no internal antenna because its enclosure is entirely aluminum, so an external antenna must be attached in order for signal reception to be possible.

6.
Reconnect the power cord and remaining cables. Power on the computer.

7.
After logging in, double-click System Profiler (/Applications/Utilities) and click AirPort Card in the hardware contents list.

If you have installed the AirPort Extreme Card successfully, System Profiler will display information about the card.
