Installing a Hard Drive

The Power Mac G5 has three internal drive bays: one optical drive bay and two hard drive bays. In most configurations, a single hard drive occupies the top hard drive bay and an optical drive is located in the front optical drive bay.

You can add a Serial ATA disk drive to the empty slot in the hard drive bay. The drives must meet these specifications:

  • Type: Serial ATA

  • Form Factor (disk size): 3.5 inch

  • Width: 3.9 inches (102 mm)

  • Depth: 5.7 inches (147 mm)

  • Height: 1.0 inch

NOTE

Use the original Apple cables that came with the Macintosh when you install ATA or optical drives.

The following installation process is extremely simple. It assumes you have already removed the Power Mac G5 computer's access panel and grounded yourself following the steps on the previous pages.

1.
Unscrew the four drive guides from the left side of the hard drive bay and screw them to the threads at the sides of the hard drive, as shown in the following illustration.

Notice that these screws have smooth, rounded semicircular heads. The heads of these screws act as guides along the internal tracks, which are also semicircular-shaped. The guide screws eliminate the need for attaching the drive to a metal bracket or carrier.

NOTE

If the printed circuit board (PCB) is exposed on the bottom of the hard drive, hold the drive by its sides. To avoid damaging the drive, take care not to touch the PCB during installation.

2.
Slide the additional drive into the lower drive bay, aligning the drive guides into the bottom track, and gently push the drive until it snaps into place.

3.
Rotate the appropriate drive bay tab down to secure the drive.

4.
Connect the power cable and the Serial ATA data cable to the drive.

5.
Close the side access panel. Reconnect the power cord and remaining cables. Power on the computer.

6.
After logging in, double-click Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities).

If you have installed the additional hard drive successfully, Disk Utility will display information about the drive.
