Installing RAM

All iBook models come with memory already installed on the logic board. This memory can't be removed. However, all iBook models also have a single SO-DIMM slot for memory expansion (G3-based iBook models use PC100 modules; G4-based iBook models use PC2100 modules). If there is a memory module installed in this slot, you must remove it before you insert a replacement module.

The memory slot in the iBook G4 (12-inch late 2004) can accept an SDRAM module that meets the following specifications:

  • Double data rate (DDR) small outline dual inline memory module (SO-DIMM) format

  • 1.25 inch or smaller

  • 128, 256, 512 MB, or 1 gigabyte (GB)

  • 200-pin

  • PC2100 DDR 266 Type RAM

The maximum amount of memory you can install is 1.256 GB, using one 1 GB DIMM in the memory slot.

The following installation process is extremely simple. It presumes you have already opened the iBook G4 following the steps on the previous pages.

Removing the AirPort Extreme Card

The optional AirPort Extreme Card must be removed temporarily to permit access to the RAM shield beneath.

1.
If the computer has the optional AirPort Extreme Card installed, lift up the flexible wire bracket that secures the AirPort Extreme Card and antenna.

2.
Detach the antenna cable from the AirPort Extreme Card.

3.
Use the pull-tab on the card to remove the card from the slot.

NOTE

To avoid scratching the computer's case, place a soft cloth between the AirPort Extreme Card and the iBook surface.

Removing the RAM Shield

Beneath the AirPort Extreme Card slot is a metal RAM shield that must be removed temporarily to permit access to the memory slot beneath.

1.
Unlatch the flexible wire bracket to release the AirPort antenna cable.

2.
Remove the four Phillips #0 screws that secure the RAM shield.

3.
Lift the RAM shield out of the computer.

4.
Route the AirPort antenna cable out of the slot in the RAM shield. Set the RAM shield aside.

Installing the Memory Module

1.
Locate the installed memory module and brackets that secure the module on both sides.

2.
Carefully spread the brackets away from the notches in the module until the module releases on each side.

3.
Pull the module up and out of the memory slot.

4.
Line up the notch in the replacement memory module with the small tab in the memory slot. Hold the module at a 30-degree angle, and then push the module into the slot until it is firmly seated.

If you feel resistance when inserting the module, try pushing one side at a time.

5.
Gently push the top of the module down until the brackets snap onto both sides of the memory module to lock it into place.

NOTE

Warning: Apply gentle pressure to the memory module only. Pressing on nearby connectors or components can cause electrical damage.

6.
Reassemble the computer by replacing the RAM shield, AirPort Extreme Card, keyboard, and battery.

7.
Position the computer in the upright position. Reconnect the power cord and remaining cables. Power on the computer.

8.
After logging in, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu to verify that the computer recognizes the newly installed memory.
