Revealing Character Formatting

Q1:As a former WordPerfect user, I'm accustomed to WordPerfect's "reveal codes" command, which displays formatting directives hidden in a document, much like HTML tags. When I search through online help, however, there's no mention of Word's reveal codes command.
A1: Word doesn't use WordPerfect-style codes to apply formatting. Instead, it stores formatting for each character with the character itself, and it stores paragraph formatting in the paragraph mark. However, the Reveal Formatting task pane displays the names of styles and direct formatting applied to any character.

Automatically Updating Styles

Q1:When I opened a document that contained a number of custom styles, the formatting changed unexpectedly, and clicking the Undo button didn't bring them back.
A1: Styles in the document template are overwriting styles in the document itself. If you create a set of formats in named styles and save them in a document, you might find that your styles get wiped out by styles of the same name stored in the document template every time you open the document. To make sure you don't have the problem, choose Tools, Templates and Add-Ins, and clear the Automatically Update Document Styles box.

Restoring the Default Normal Template

Q1:I've made a mess of the Normal template, and every new document I create inherits formatting I don't want.
A1: You have two choices. The easy (but drastic) option is to exit Word, rename Normal.dot to something else (for example, Old-normal.dot), and start Word again. When Word can't find Normal.dot, it creates a new Normal document template; in the process, however, you'll lose all your toolbar customizations, keyboard shortcuts, formatted AutoCorrect entries, and much more.

The more tedious option is to choose Format, Style and use Format button options to work through every style in the template until you have the Normal style back to where it started. For U.S. installations, that includes the following defaults: Times New Roman, 12 point, English (U.S.), Flush left, Line spacing single, Widow/orphan control. Make sure you click Add to Template when you're done. It's more work, but you won't lose any of your customizing.
