R allows you to change the behavior of most objects, including most well-known functions provided. An extreme example would be to rework how the mean() function works. Maybe you have insight into the exact nature of the data you are working with and can increase performance accordingly in your special case.

As with the preceding tool, you could exercise the provided functionality and then your implementation, and compare profile information provided by microbenchmark.
