Splices
Use only accepted splicing methods to make
splices in permitted boxes. Split-bolt connec-
tors or terminal strips are approved splicing
equipment. Only heavy-duty crimping tools
can be used with the splicing equipment.
Other devices may be “recognized,” but they
are not suitable for use in the field.
Twist mechanical terminal conductors,
and make a tight electrical and mechanical
connection with the wire connectors. Then
braze the connection. Brazing means welding
or soldering with a hard solder that has a
high melting point. Finally, tape the connec-
tion to cover any exposed wire, unless it is a
bare grounding wire.
Twisted wire and wire nuts are not
acceptable splicing methods in PV systems.
We strongly advise you not to use wire nuts,
especially on the DC side of the system.
Conductor Color Codes
There are color codes established for electrical power systems. The NEC accepts
these color codes for PV systems.
AC Wires
Neutral grounded conductors must be white or gray, or have three continuous
white strips the length of the wire. Green must be used for equipment grounding.
Ungrounded conductors may be anything other than white, gray, or green.
DC Wires
Grounded conductors should use white or gray, or have three continuous white
strips the length of the wire. Equipment grounds should use green or no color if
there is no insulation. Ungrounded conductors can use anything other than
white, gray, or green.

PV Array Ground-Fault Protection
Grounded PV arrays are required to have ground-fault pro-
tection (GFP) per NEC Article 690.5. All grid-tied and some
All panels must be grounded to protect the PV system, and
