If the PV system is ground-mounted or pole-mounted, make sure to let the
insurance agent know. It can be insured as an appurtenant structure, or unin-
habited structure on the property. Examples of appurtenant structures include
detached garages, barns, and sheds. You home is more highly valued than an
appurtenant structure. Insurance premiums on appurtenant structures
are cheaper.
Liability Coverage
Liability coverage protects the customer from any damage that the PV system may
cause. Liability insurance covers death from electrical shock and other personal
injuries associated with working around the system or on a utility line.
Some utility companies may require the amount of coverage necessary for
any damages the PV system may cause. Check the interconnection agreement for
that information. Customers may appeal to the state PUC if they feel the pre-
mium is too high or the requirement unreasonable.
PV System Inspections
Contact the AHJ and other PV system inspectors during PV system planning.
Including them early on will produce the greatest opportunity for installing an
optimal-performing PV system. This also ensures that the PV system is up to
code. It can save time and effort. It also can create a good relationship.
For example:
Talk with local electricians or contractors
about the requirements for permits
and inspections.
Seek out the AHJ and other inspectors for
advice on PV system plans.
Acquire the essential permits.
Engage the inspector prior to and during
the installation process by providing one-
line and three-line drawings and inclusive
equipment descriptions through cut
sheets, and find out what they are looking
for and most concerned about.
Install equipment, conduit, and wiring
according to approved plans.
If it is a tough job, or you are not sure how
the inspector will view your installation,
ask for a courtesy inspection.
Following a successful inspection, the inspector will provide
a Green Tag indicating that the Code inspection is complete,
and that the system passed. A utility inspection will follow;
however, neither will address performance, reliability, or
output issues.
