OSHA Regulations
OSHA is the federal agency that sets requirements for safe workplaces, free from
hazards. It generates health and safety guidelines for the workplace. For work on
PV system installations, use 29 CFR Part 1926 Safety and Health Regulations for
Construction. This chapter will go into more detail about each of the following
health and safety standards found in 29 CFR Part 1926:
Subpart C—General Safety and Health Provisions
Subpart D—Occupational Health and Environmental Controls
Subpart E—Personal Protective Equipment and Life Saving Equipment
Subpart I—Hand and Power Tools
Subpart K—Electrical
Subpart M—Fall Protection
Subpart L & X—Scaffolding, Lifts, Stairways, and Ladders
General Safety Regulations
Subpart C discusses general safety and health regulations. These regulations
include a great deal. The general safety codes for 29 CRF 1926 include the
following:
1926.20—General health and safety requirements: Employers must ensure
that working conditions are sanitary and safe.
1926.21—Safety education and training: Employers must educate
employees on the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions and
applicable regulations to control or eliminate any hazards that may cause
injury or illness.
1926.23 —First aid: Employers must provide first-aid services and medical
care provisions at the job site including bandages.
1926.24—Fire prevention and protection: Employers must establish
effective fire protection and prevention programs.
1926.25—Housekeeping: Employers must use adequate methods to keep
job sites clear and to dispose of debris on the job site.
1926.26—Lighting: Employers must make certain that all construction
areas are suitably well-lighted.
1926.27—Sanitation: Employers must provide drinking water at the
job site.
1926.28—Personal protective equipment (PPE): Employers must provide
personal protective equipment to employees and teach them how to use it.
1926.33—Access to employee medical records: Employers must obtain
employee medical records in case of an incident and make sure OSHA
