A PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) SYSTEM CONVERTS ENERGY from the sun into
electricity. A PV system uses solar panels to collect direct current from
sunlight. The energy from a PV system can power equipment for both
businesses and households. PV systems require no fuel, and the manufac-
ture and eventual disposal of their components generate few pollutants;
yet these systems generate electrical energy for use day and night. Photo-
voltaics are relatively simple, and they are one of the fastest-growing areas
of the renewable energy industry.
This chapter provides a very broad overview of the design and installa-
tion steps and recommendations needed to produce electricity from the
sun. You should refer to this chapter as you continue through the book.
