Check for proper PV system operation. Use the PV system installation
checklists included in this chapter as a tool to ensure successful PV system opera-
tion. You can handle system operation in either of two ways: 1) having the utility
conduct preparation and start-up; or 2) having a third party check out the system
and certify its commissioning before you turn it over to the customer.
Test all circuits, strings, and arrays, as well as combiner box input and
output. The checkout procedures cover the PV array. The checkout procedures
checklist notes all items you should inspect, such as the conductors, combiners,
fuses and circuit breakers, and mechanical attachments. Scrutinize charge con-
trollers and disconnects in accordance with the checklist. Check the battery, fluid
levels, and battery cables thoroughly. Verify using the checklist that each part of
the PV system is installed correctly and is properly operational. Torque all
mechanical and electrical connections and retorque them after the burn-in phase
(usually after 90 days).
Make sure to meet local utility interconnection requirements. Intercon-
necting a PV system with the utility grid requires an interconnection agreement
with the local utility company. This agreement gives technical requirements to
ensure safety. The agreement also often identifies the permits and additional
requirements needed for utility to accept the system. The smartest thing to do is
to involve the utility company as early as possible in the installation and stay cur-
rent on all utility policy and format changes.
Prepare for final inspections by the AHJ and the utility. The AHJ is one of
the many inspection groups that weigh in on the PV system design and installa-
tion. A good relationship with the local jurisdiction, a clear and professional
understanding of requirements and procedures, and a complete understanding of
code will serve you and the customer wellfrom the submission of plans,
through plans review, and on to inspection. After installation is complete, the
local AHJ inspects the PV system. This agency verifies what site and system draw-
ings must be submitted and requires that the accepted drawings be available to
the inspector and physically in place on the site. It also requires the customer to
provide proof of an interconnection agreement with the utility company, if the
PV system is on-grid.
General Recommendations for Installations
The general guidelines discussed in this section will help you choose the right
equipment and supplies for a PV system. Using the best installation methods
ensures many years of reliable service. These recommendations may be used to
