PV System Maintenance and Operation
In general, PV system maintenance takes a small amount of time and effort. The
PV arrays require washing. You should do this twice a year, or whenever there is a
noticeable amount of dirt or bird droppings. Bird droppings will not just wash off
with rain or snow. For systems near a freeway, airport, or construction zone, the
cleaning will be more frequent. In most instances, high-pressure water spraying is
sufficient, and from time to time, you should use a mop and mild detergent. Try
to wash the arrays during the cool of the day.
Annually check system wiring and supports, and retorque as needed. Look
for cracks, glass damage, and cable or wire damage.
Check each string for voltage with a voltmeter to make sure the modules are
functioning properly. Each string should read within a few percent if tested
quickly under the same conditions. Any string that is more than 2 percent or so
off may have an issue. Check connectivity for every panel. Each year at the begin-
ning of spring and fall (March 21 and September 21), review the output of the PV
system. Keep a log of system performance so that you can compare the previous
years readings. Make sure that system performance stays consistent. This helps
