Permit Guidelines for Small-Scale PV Systems
The permit guidelines for PV systems include documentation of various
components. You have to submit these drawings as part of the permit process.
Most permitting agencies require a set of five basic drawings:
1. Site plan showing the location of the permit site.
2. Plant plan showing the location of the equipment on that site.
3. An array diagram showing the details of the arrays, or a collection of
electrically connected photovoltaic (PV) modules, and their electrical
calculations.
4. One-line diagram showing a simplified layout of the entire system and its
components.
5. Three-line diagram that shows more detail, including code citations.
Different entities require different information. You will be asked to identify
the type and size of the PV system. You will be asked to provide information on
the customer and the site. It is your responsibility to understand their require-
ments and provide them as accurately as possible.
The necessary paperwork for permitting may include some or all of the
following:
The local authority’s required forms
Basic site diagram
Plant diagram distinguishing the placement of major components
One-line drawing highlighting all the installed electrical components, wiring
sizes and identification, and grounding
Three-line drawing showing additional detail
Inverter information and cut sheet
Module information and cut sheet
Battery information and cut sheet
PV arrays and array mounting systems
Wiring and overcurrent protection
PV system disconnecting means, and any mechanisms used to join or
disconnect electrical components within a PV system
Grounding
Basic Site Diagram
Create a drawing that illustrates the location of PV equipment. For ground-
mounted PV arrays, identify the setback distance, and make sure it is within the
allowable zone. This drawing should be very detailed.
