PV SYSTEMS EVOLVE through many stages before becoming solid,
functional equipment. They start with a concept that is made into a set of
drawings. These are submitted to the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ)
and the utility. The AHJ and the utility company sign off on the PV system
design and installation. The PV system then is approved for operation and
commissioning by the utility company.
Prior to installation, the local AHJ must provide a permit for the PV
system. You cannot begin construction until you receive the permit. In the
installation process, the design may be modified. The PV system design
must adhere to building codes, National Electrical Code (NEC) guidelines,
and utility standards. The codes and guidelines are required by the AHJ or
utility. The AHJ will inspect the PV site, review plans, and accepted
drawings. It assures that the PV system schematics are implemented as
permitted. The AHJ also determines the proper interpretation of the codes
they are enforcing. A final inspection by the utility company will
commission the PV system and certify that it is operational.
This chapter also examines warranties and insuring PV systems.
