Using the Format Menu for Precise Control

You can change a row or column's size by dragging the border of a row or column. However, you cannot control the size as precisely as you can by providing specific sizes with the Format, Row Height and Format, Column Width commands.

These steps show you how to use the Format menu to change the column width:

  1. Select the column(s) whose width you want to change. To change the width of a single column, select any cell in that column.

  2. Open the Format menu, select Column, and select Width. The Column Width dialog box appears (see Figure 20.2).

Figure 20.2. Changing the column width.

  3. Type the number of characters you would like as the width. The default width is 8.43.

  4. Click OK or press Enter to put your changes into effect.

By default, Excel makes a row a bit taller than the tallest text in the row. For example, if the tallest text is 10 points tall, Excel makes the row itself 12.75 points tall. You can use the Format menu to change the row height manually:

  1. Select the row(s) whose height you want to change. (To change the height of a single row, select any cell in that row.)

  2. Open the Format menu, select Row, and select Height. The Row Height dialog box shown in Figure 20.3 appears.

Figure 20.3. Changing the row height.

  3. Type the desired height (in points).

  4. Click OK or press Enter to implement the change in your worksheet.

In this lesson, you learned how to change the row height and column width. In the next lesson, you will learn how to use Excel with the Internet.
